This year, I have been gathering vibrant leaves on my morning walks. *A side note on why – our recently retired and adopted greyhound, Rosie, likes to take “sniff” walks. We saunter while she sniffs every blade of grass. I had time to find and pick up leaves to pass the minutes ~ wink & smile. Bringing them home I decided to put them in books to flatten, press, and dry. I didn’t know what I would do for a while, then thought I’d like to send them to friends. Then I went on to believe Thanks-giving cards. (I spell it that way because that is how I think of them.) So here is how I made my handmade Fall Leaf Notecards.
Here are the easy instructions ~
Place fall leaves (or any leaves) in books to flatten, press, and dry. If damp, add a paper towel on both sides of the leaves to preserve the book. When they are flat and dry, after a couple of days, I use a glue stick or glue tape to hold them in place while I embellish them.
I sewed/embroidered the leaves with embroidery floss and metallic threads. Then, I tied my threads over the tips of leaves and stems for a couple of cards. I did a large running stitch to hold in place for a few.
On another card, I used raffia as a ribbon. I still used metallic thread that matched the raffia to hold down leaf tips. Then, I cut small slots the width of the jute into the front of the card. Then, I wrapped the jute through and tied a knot. Another option to jute is ribbon or lace.
I taped some cards with washi tape. I am still determining where I found this particular one – it was in my stash. You know, we keep the one box of odds and ends just in case ~ wink
Then, I added handwritten sayings and poems to finish. The options are endless; think about the person to receive the card. Leaving it plain is also an option – classic simplicity. I have a quick video on making them on A Carefully Curated Life Facebook page. Jump on over here.
They didn’t take much time, but I like how they turned out. Now, you can also laminate them if you wish. I didn’t have the time – sending the card was more critical than laminating it.
