Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. For many it is a religious time of giving up something for the next 40 days. I grew up with a few Catholic friends. As I was speaking with one on Tuesday; she was telling me what she was thinking of giving up for Lent. After I hung up the phone I wondered, “What if we decided to give something good for the next 40 days?”
Now I want to say I am in no way talking bad about religion or Catholicism. I am a believer just not of that faith. I am only saying it got me thinking of adding to our lives not taking away. For me I can give up chocolate easier than keeping a new habit for 40 days. Also I realized that as I am getting older, my world is getting smaller especially since we moved. We are in a new home not knowing many people but I could reach out to old friends and find new friends. So why not try for the next 40 days ~ bringing something good into my life.
So what about you?
What good do you need? What good could you give? Here are a few ideas ~
- Give a smile to strangers as you pass them in the store.
- Give yourself 5 minutes everyday just to breathe in peace.
- Spread caring by writing a postcard or short note to someone each day.
- Compliment one person each day.
- Write down one thing you are grateful for each day.
- I share a few other ideas on this post
What could you do for the next 40 days for good?
Just saying ~ it is a thought. For me, I am going to be out-going (this will be hard for me I am an introvert) and to be present ~ to reach out to someone old friend or new acquaintance, each day whether it is a call, a note or in-person visit.
