I realized it is Earth Day, so let’s help care for the planet and figure out a few Earth Day ideas. Time to make another change or adjustment. Maybe make a tweak in my lifestyle to help our planet. For instance some years I made big changes, paying for adding recycling to my garbage collection, while some years little changes were made, changing to CFL or LED lights as the old light bulbs burnt out. I realize saying, “Help save our planet” may be a wild cry for some and for some not strong enough but for me it has been part of my values for a long time.
First, growing up there was a TV ad to “Keep America Beautiful” that touched my emotions and led me to start thinking of my actions involving the environment. In addition, I am adding their website for more information – KAB.org.
Secondly, I grew up with a Grandmother who reused everything because she grew up during the Depression and lived on a very rural farm where she needed to find another use for everything. For instance a Miracle Whip glass container became a thermos of cold tea to take to my Grandfather out in the bean field. I often think of her as I start to automatically throw out a container – can I use this for something else? Consequently I often think of how to reuse everyday items, but more on that in another blog ~ wink.
Here are Earth Day Idea Actions, remember big and small do make a difference
- Purchase a pretty refillable water bottle
- Plant a tree
- Use ‘green’ cleaning products
- Sew or purchase reusable shopping bags
- Change to CFL or LED light bulbs
- Start a compost pile
- Unplug or turn off electronics when not in use
- Learn to recycle
- Turn off the water while brushing your teeth
- Buy secondhand, consignment or vintage
- Support green business
- Purchase products from recycled items
- Don’t use disposable dishes & cutlery
- Stop junk mail
- Use a drying rack or clothes line instead of the dryer
Over the years with recycling, refillable water bottles and CFL/LED light bulbs have become commonplace. Yet I find I have become lax in my “green” habits. So this year I will start a compost pile and review recycling methods. What about you? Please share any Earth Day ideas you have.
