Dreaming of Home: Beginning Thoughts. The 2nd part of the Series
Dreaming of Home: Beginning Thoughts
We are starting Dreaming of Home with beginning thoughts. Previously in the blog, December Musings, stated, “A Home, I believe, that supports us allows us to go out into the world and build our dreams. Our relationship to home is like our relationships with others – as we nurture, grow and spend time with our home our life is supported and nurtured from it.”
So where do we begin Dreaming of Home? How do we start creating one?
This beginning is not about throwing out everything to begin anew. The beginning starts with dreaming, exploring, and writing in our journals what home means to us personally. Here are three steps I’d like you to take before beginning to tear things up.
Feeling and Functioning of Your Home
#1 – To begin with, what defines “Home”? The answer is different for each of us. Basically here we are talking about the emotions of Home. Ask yourself:
- What do you dream of in a Home?
- How do you want to feel when you come Home?
- What does your mind and soul need on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis?
TAKE ACTION: Firstly, take a moment and write about what it means to us and others in the home. Then start collecting pictures of things that bring the emotions of home or the vibe of the space. You can do this with your Curated Life Journal, an accordion file, a vision board, or a Pinterest board.
Don’t rush this. This is the beginning of creating a home. And at the same time don’t wait for the “perfect” idea. Our homes evolve as we do and as our life does. So work with where you are at this moment. Take the time to sit in your house and figure out how you want the space to feel. This is how to begin to create our dreams of home.
#2 – Ask these questions about your physical needs then let ideas and more questions flow:
- What does your body need on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis?
- Are there any issues to address? For example – Is one room chilly? Would curtains with a lining help block drafts?
- Am I drawn to some spaces and not others? Why? For example – Does the chair in the living room corner welcome you in? Or do you not go into the living room at all?
TAKE ACTION: Specifically, block some time in your week to ask questions and to let your mind flow. Like before, sit in rooms and figure out what works and what does not work. Then start collecting pictures of things we like, how rooms are laid out, or the design of the space. As before you can do this with your Curated Life Journal, a file, a vision board, or a Pinterest board.
Inspiration for Your Dream of Home: a Beginning Step
Find one thing (can be a couple) to start as ‘The Inspiration’ to begin. I have a painting that I love that I am going to start with. Yes, I am saying start with. This is the jumping-off spot and other elements will be added as we go but this is a place to begin.
Personal Note: I love this painting, it is from where we used to live in Michigan, the colors draw me in and I met the artist when we first moved there – she was lovely. As you can see the painting is special to me.
You have special items or maybe pieces of furniture that can be a place to begin. If you don’t, maybe a piece of fabric or magazine picture catches your desires. That is another fine place to start!
TAKE ACTION: Find your inspiration, your beginning step, your jumping-off spot. Whatever you call it, find what inspires you to begin. Below is a page in my CLJ along with fabric I found using the colors in my painting. I will show you in the next blog how we will continue to create our dream home but I wanted to show my beginning ideas in my journal and the fabric I loved.
Now if you are wondering what I was talking about previously. I have a guide to help you Coordinate Color in 3 Easy Steps. You can download it if you need help, we’ll be using it in a future video DIY and the next blog.
Dreaming of Home and all the Possibilities
What I want us to do is dwell on all the possibilities. In short – daydream, sketch, collage, visit museums, and view designer show houses (online has great possibilities also) just flow with your ideas. Each month I’m going to examine a room, break down the basics, add some details, and make it home. I will post on the first Thursday of every month about the room beginning in February. I will share these through blogs, videos, and DIY projects.
