The beginning idea of A Carefully Curated Life Book Club
Starting a Book Club has been calling to me for a few years. Last year I asked if anyone was interested, a few of you said “Yes”. But I didn’t jump in – to be honest a bit of overwhelm jumped into my head. I couldn’t decide which books to read. So the idea has been swirling around for a year yodeling at me. Therefore, to calm the yodeler and listen to my heart’s yearnings I am starting A Carefully Curated Life (CCL) Book Club.
This CCL Book Club is a place to read about ideas in different aspects of life. Above all, not all Self-Help books. But books that circle our life. Ideas that we can ponder with compassionate conversation. Not every idea will resonate in each of us. ‘I Dwell in Possibility’ as Emily Dickinson wrote, leads the way then we can decide if it works for us or not. I really want us to read a wide variety of subjects – interior/home design, gardening/special interests, inspiration, lifestyles and a bit of fiction.
Books, ideas and community. I love the thought of us chatting about which idea(s) from the book called to us – good, bad and a great big ‘What?’. This book club isn’t to “Fix a life” , it is for us to mull over ideas. Finally, it is to get past “like” and “didn’t like” with thoughtful ponderings.
What are the CCL club’s books?
“What is the lineup of books?” I am smiling and laughing at myself – I cannot narrow it down to one Gardening/Plant Book. So let’s chat and that will help guide me.
January | A Year of Yes: How to… by Shonda Rhimes |
February | Sage Living: Decorate… by Anne Sage |
March | Midnight Library: A Novel by Matt Haig |
April | In the Company of Women: Inspiration… by Grace Bonney |
May | TBD – Gardening Book |
June | Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh |
July | Playing Big by Tara Mohr |
August | Simple Stunning Parties at Home by Karen Bussen |
September | TBD – Hygge? Yet to be decided which one |
October | How to Cook a Wolf by M.F.K. Fisher |
November | Wild at Home by Hilton Carter |
December | Cultivate by Lara Casey |
Let me take a moment to talk about the CCL Book Club books.
I don’t want to influence you on the books so I will give the basic theme of these books. There are two memoirs; first a classic, Gift from the Sea, then a recent release A Year of Yes.
Sage Living and Hygge are interior design books with different current design theories. I included a fiction, Midnight Library.
In addition, for Inspiration a book, In the Company of Women, full of short stories about makers, artists and entrepreneurs. I did include two self-help genre but just because I thought the ideas would be good discussion, Playing Big and Cultivate.
Another book added was Simple Stunning Parties thoughts on bringing this into the seasons and daily life. Which are elements we discuss often in A Carefully Curated Life.
Now the garden books. One yet to be determined is outside gardening. Should it be flowers, herbs, basics, landscaping? We’ll chat and decide the direction. On the other hand inside-gardening, houseplants, is Wild at Home. Above all I can’t wait to hear what you all think of these ideas.
Lastly, How to Cook a Wolf is not about cooking a wolf but is a classic written during the Second World War. It does talk about cooking but as Google states “Written to inspire courage in those daunted by wartimes shortages…” In a way it is the first Foodie Lit ~ wink.
Now for the details:
There will be no charge. A Carefully Curated Life Book Club will meet via on Zoom. We will continue to meet on zoom as the pandemic evolves, later we might want to have a few in-person. I do want to say even if we go in-person in Louisville I will keep this group via Zoom as I love our diverse group spread out across the country.
I do ask that you sign-up to get the Zoom link. This way you will be notified when the TBD books are chosen. That is to say please jump over to this landing page to sign up and for group details. Feel free to invite friends.
Also I am excited to say my local independent bookstore, Carmichael’s Bookstore here in Louisville Kentucky, will give a 20% discount on our books. They do ship; you just need to mention this bookclub, A Carefully Curated Life (or CCL) to get the discount. This is not an affiliate link. I enjoy supporting local places and they are offering to support us – a win both ways. Also both the Carmichael’s and Carmichael’s Kids Bookstores are on Rosie’s top 5 favorite places to go locally – they give her great treats and loving when we stop in ~ wink.
